Just days after departing The Washington Post, the team behind Capital Weather has officially launched its next chapter as an independent weather media company serving the Washington region.
On Tuesday, Capital Weather founder and chief meteorologist Jason Samenow announced the launch of Capital Weather, a standalone organization that will provide forecasts, climate reporting, live weather updates, newsletters, a mobile app, and a community for weather enthusiasts and residents who rely on accurate local weather information.
“Today marks a new chapter,” Samenow wrote. “After nearly 18 years at The Washington Post, our team has launched Capital Weather, an independent weather media company serving the DC region.”
The announcement comes less than two weeks after Capital Weather Gang revealed it would be leaving The Washington Post and returning to its independent roots. The popular weather outlet originally launched in 2004 before joining The Washington Post in 2008, where it grew into one of the region’s most trusted and widely followed sources for forecasts, severe weather coverage, winter storm tracking, and climate reporting.
Samenow thanked fellow meteorologists Dan Stillman, Ian Livingston, Camden Walker, Mark Wolly, and the broader Capital Weather team for helping make the transition possible. “I’m incredibly grateful to the entire Capital Weather team,” Samenow wrote. “This wouldn’t have happened without them.”
At the end of May, the team said it would continue providing trusted forecasts and weather analysis for the Washington region while maintaining a relationship with The Washington Post during major local weather events and significant weather and climate stories.
The newly independent operation includes more than 10 contributors, including eight meteorologists, a photographer, and a business manager. Most members of the team have worked together for more than a decade.
