Historic African American Landmark Pleasant View To Reopen On June 20th

One of Montgomery County’s most significant African American historic landmarks will officially reopen to the public later this month following a major restoration effort.

The Pleasant View Reopening Celebration will take place on Saturday, June 20, from 10am to 2pm at the historic site located at 11810 Darnestown Road in Gaithersburg. The event will commemorate the restoration of the 158-year-old property, which includes a church, schoolhouse, and social hall that once served as the heart of a historic Black community.

Organizers describe the reopening as both a celebration and an opportunity to connect with an important chapter of local history. Visitors will have the chance to tour the restored buildings, learn about the site’s significance, and participate in a day of presentations, performances, book signings, health screenings, food trucks, and family-friendly activities.

Former Montgomery County Executive Isiah “Ike” Leggett will serve as the event’s keynote speaker. Programming is scheduled to begin at 12pm. The Pleasant View Historic Site has long been recognized as an important landmark representing the history, resilience, and contributions of Montgomery County’s African American community. The restoration effort was undertaken to preserve the site for future generations and ensure that the stories connected to the property continue to be shared.

Organizers are encouraging residents, families, history enthusiasts, and community members from across the county to attend the celebration and experience the newly restored campus firsthand.

The event is free to attend. Registration is requested in advance. The reopening celebration is being held in partnership with MARCH ON! and is sponsored by Montgomery County Public Libraries.
