Community Mourns The Loss Of Jose “Luis” Flores

The Negril family is mourning the loss of Jose “Luis” Flores, a longtime leader at its Silver Spring location who became a beloved fixture in the community over more than three decades of service.

Flores, affectionately known as “El Jefe,” “El Presidente,” and by many as the unofficial mayor of Downtown Silver Spring, passed away on June 3, 2026. He had been part of the Negril family for 31 years.

In a heartfelt message shared by the restaurant, Negril reflected on Flores’ impact, describing him as someone whose presence and energy were felt by everyone who walked through the doors. “Anyone who regularly frequented our Silver Spring location, past or present, knew Luis,” Negril wrote. “To know him was to feel his warmth. He had a way of lighting up a room, making people feel welcome, and leading with a heart that left a lasting impact on everyone around him.”

According to the restaurant, Flores played a key role in helping grow and shape the Silver Spring location over the past three decades. His dedication, leadership, and commitment to customers helped establish the restaurant as a community gathering place and contributed to its long-term success.

Negril shared memories of Flores opening the restaurant early each morning, welcoming construction workers, parking attendants, and countless regulars who would stop by for a quick meal and a conversation. “He knew everyone, and everyone knew him,” Negril said.

Among the many memories shared was Flores’ connection to Negril’s popular jerk chicken sandwich. While its origins may be debated, Negril noted that, to them, Flores would always be the person most closely associated with the beloved menu item because of the care and pride he put into preparing it every day.

The restaurant said Flores’ legacy will continue to live on through the company, its employees, its customers, and the many lives he touched throughout the Silver Spring community.

Flores is remembered as a husband, father, brother, uncle, friend, mentor, and community leader whose impact extended far beyond the walls of the restaurant. “Our thoughts, prayers, and deepest love are with his family, friends, coworkers, and all who are grieving this tremendous loss,” the statement read. “Rest in Paradise, Luis. You will always be part of our family.”
