A new Playa Bowls location is headed to Urbana. Franchisee Gene Sherman announced that a lease has been signed to bring the popular smoothie bowl and juice chain to the Villages at Urbana shopping center.
The new restaurant will be located at 3531 John Simmons Street, Suite D09, in the space formerly occupied by Urbana Tanning, which closed earlier this year. “Exciting News! Lease has been signed to bring Playa Bowls to Urbana!” Sherman shared. “Still many months ahead to get the store open, but excited to bring Playa to Urbana.”
While construction and permitting work remain ahead, Sherman said the current target is an opening in early winter 2027. “So excited for Playa to be in Urbana!” he added.
Founded in New Jersey, Playa Bowls has grown rapidly across the country by offering acai bowls, pitaya bowls, coconut bowls, smoothies, juices, and other health-focused menu items inspired by a beach lifestyle.
The Urbana location will become the second Playa Bowls in Frederick County. The county’s first location opened in December 2024 at Clemson Corner, located at 7820 Wormans Mill Road in Frederick. No opening date has been finalized, but Sherman said he plans to share updates as construction progresses.
