Shepherd’s Table, a Silver Spring nonprofit that provides free meals and support services to people experiencing food insecurity, homelessness and poverty, has received a $3,000 Nourishing Our Neighbors grant from the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation.
The funding will help the organization purchase additional fresh produce and nutritious ingredients for its daily meal program, which has served more than 2 million meals since its founding.
The grant comes as Shepherd’s Table anticipates increased demand for services during the summer months, when it also operates as a Montgomery County cooling center during periods of extreme heat. Founded in 1983 by 15 local congregations, Shepherd’s Table has expanded beyond meal service to offer housing referrals, transportation assistance, a clothing closet, an eye clinic, workforce development programs and advocacy initiatives. The organization said the funding will help expand access to healthy meal options while supporting the broader needs of community members facing food insecurity and housing instability.
