Takoma Park Police are reminding residents to use extreme caution when dealing with storm damage and to call 911 for any storm-related emergencies involving injuries, trees that have fallen into structures, or downed power lines that may still be energized.
Officials warn that fallen trees and branches can create serious hazards long after severe weather has passed. Residents should avoid touching or attempting to remove branches that are near sagging or downed power lines and instead report the issue to their utility provider immediately. Even lines that appear inactive may still be carrying electricity.
Police also advise staying away from trees with hanging branches or leaning trunks, as even minor disturbances can cause damaged limbs or entire trees to fall. Homeowners are encouraged to inspect trees from a safe distance and contact a qualified tree care professional if they have concerns.
Uprooted trees can also pose hidden dangers, including damage to underground utility lines. Residents should avoid walking around uprooted trees and contact the appropriate utility company or a professional tree service for assistance.
While cleanup may be tempting after a storm, officials recommend leaving tree removal and pruning to experienced professionals with the proper equipment and training. Police also caution homeowners against hiring unqualified individuals who may solicit work in storm-damaged neighborhoods, noting that improper tree work can create additional safety risks and property damage.
Anyone encountering an immediate storm-related danger should call 911.
