Drivers traveling on I-95/I-495 (Capital Beltway) in Prince George’s County should prepare for overnight lane closures beginning Monday, June 29, as the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration starts a pavement improvement project between MD 214 (Central Avenue) and MD 4 (Pennsylvania Avenue).
The project will begin on the northbound (outer loop) side of the Capital Beltway and is expected to continue through late summer, weather permitting. Crews will mill and pave the roadway to improve ride quality and provide a smoother driving experience for motorists.
Work will take place overnight Sundays through Thursdays from 8pm to 5am. Drivers can expect single, double, and triple-lane closures during construction. According to SHA, the triple-lane closures are necessary to provide a safety buffer between active work areas and open traffic lanes.
Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra travel time while work is underway. Drivers should remain alert for changing traffic patterns, reduced speed limits, and work zone crews.
SHA noted that while paving projects can cause temporary delays, maintaining road surfaces is essential to ensuring a safe and reliable highway system. Drivers are reminded to slow down and move over when approaching work zones. Motorists needing roadside assistance can dial #77 from their mobile phones.
