Montgomery Parks will once again take part in Montgomery County Heritage Days this weekend, offering free admission to several historic sites across the county on Saturday, June 27, and Sunday, June 28.
The annual countywide celebration highlights Montgomery County’s history and culture through family-friendly activities, guided tours, live music, demonstrations and interactive experiences.
On Saturday, June 27, visitors can explore the Woodlawn Museum at Woodlawn Manor Cultural Park in Sandy Spring from 10am to 4pm, where exhibits inside the restored 1832 stone barn showcase the area’s agricultural, Quaker and African American history.
Also on Saturday, the Oakley Cabin African American Museum & Park in Olney will be open from 12pm to 4pm. Guests can tour the restored 19th-century log cabin, enjoy live blues music from Jay Summerour and Eric Selby, historical interpretation by Sheila Arnold, storytelling and historic games. Visitors can also experience a self-guided augmented reality tour by scanning QR codes throughout the site. Free shuttle service will be available from parking at 19801 Georgia Ave. in Brookeville.
On Sunday, June 28, the Josiah Henson Museum & Park in North Bethesda will welcome visitors from 12pm to 4pm. Guests can tour the museum and learn about the life of abolitionist Rev. Josiah Henson, whose autobiography inspired Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Parking is available across from the museum at Wall Local Park/Kennedy-Shriver Aquatic Center, with a paved walking trail leading to the entrance.
The Thomas Harper Cabin at Brookside Nature Center in Wheaton will also be open Sunday from 1pm to 4pm. Because the restored post-Civil War log cabin is only open to the public a few times each year, Heritage Days provides a rare opportunity to tour the historic home, participate in hands-on activities, learn about the Harper family and enjoy live blues music by Jay Summerour and Eric Selby.
All Montgomery Parks Heritage Days events are free and will take place rain or shine.
