A Silver Spring restaurant employee has earned one of the Washington region’s highest honors in the hospitality industry.
Jose Luis Salgado of Zinnia has been named Employee of the Year at the 2026 RAMMY Awards, presented annually by the Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington. The award recognizes outstanding hospitality professionals whose dedication, consistency, and service help create exceptional guest experiences.
Located at 9201 Colesville Road in Silver Spring, Zinnia opened in October 2021, transforming the historic Mrs. K’s Tollhouse property after the landmark restaurant closed following nearly 90 years in operation. Since opening, the all-day concept has expanded to include its Gardens beer and wine garden, café, and tavern. Today, the restaurant is also launching its new fine dining experience, led by former Republic chef and Takoma Park native Danny Wells.
In announcing Salgado’s nomination for the award, Silver Spring Downtown highlighted the role hospitality professionals play in shaping the dining experience beyond the food itself. “Great restaurants are not just about what’s on the plate,” the organization wrote. “They’re about how a place makes you feel the moment you walk in.”
Silver Spring Downtown described Salgado as someone who helps create an environment where guests feel comfortable, seen, and at home, noting that the award celebrates the people whose care, consistency, and pride make restaurants memorable destinations.
Silver Spring Downtown also said Salgado’s recognition reflects the community itself, calling the city’s restaurants gathering places where neighbors become familiar faces and families return time and again.
