The Bluest Water In Maryland Is Hiding At This State Park

If you’re looking to escape the summer heat without leaving Maryland, one of the state’s most stunning destinations is just over two hours from Montgomery County. Located in the mountains of Allegany County, Rocky Gap State Park is home to Lake Habeeb, whose crystal-clear blue waters have earned it the nickname, “the bluest water in Maryland.”

Encompassing more than 3,000 acres, Rocky Gap State Park offers a blend of mountain scenery, outdoor recreation, and peaceful lakeside views. The park is surrounded by dramatic cliffs, dense forests, and miles of hiking trails, making it a favorite destination for campers, hikers, paddlers, and families looking for a day trip.

The area also has a rich history dating back nearly 300 years. According to local legend, Jacob Evart became the first English settler in what is now Allegany County around 1730 after moving west following a failed relationship. He built a home atop what is now known as Evitts Mountain, overlooking present-day Rocky Gap. Today, hikers can follow the Homesite Trail to the location where his cabin once stood. Only the remains of a well are still visible.

Much of the land that now makes up the park was once farmland, including Clover Hill Farm, a dairy farm operated by the McLuckie family for much of the 20th century. In the 1960s, local businessman Edward Habeeb and dozens of other landowners helped make the state park possible by donating or selling their land with the understanding that it would become a public recreation area.

Construction of the park began after Maryland acquired more than 2,200 acres, and in 1970 the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built a dam across Rocky Gap Run to create Lake Habeeb. The 243-acre lake, named in honor of Edward Habeeb, officially became part of Rocky Gap State Park when the park opened on July 17, 1974. Like every lake in Maryland, Lake Habeeb is man-made.

Today, Lake Habeeb is known for its exceptional water clarity. The lake reaches depths of up to 74 feet, helping create its vivid blue appearance. White sandstone and quartzite from the surrounding mountains naturally filter sediment before it reaches the water, contributing to the lake’s remarkable clarity.

During the summer, visitors can enjoy two public swimming beaches, along with kayaking, canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding, boating, and fishing. Gas-powered boats are restricted, helping preserve the lake’s quiet atmosphere. Kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards are available to rent at the park. Fishing is also popular, with anglers targeting largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, trout, panfish, and crappie.

Beyond the lake, Rocky Gap features more than 15 miles of trails, including the popular 5.3-mile Lakeside Loop Trail, which circles Lake Habeeb and offers scenic views throughout the hike. Visitors can also explore the historic Bucy Cemetery, which dates back to the 1800s and contains Civil War-era gravestones.

For those looking to stay overnight, the park offers tent and RV campsites, mini cabins, yurts, and access to the nearby Rocky Gap Casino Resort.

Whether you’re looking for a relaxing beach day, a mountain hike, or a weekend camping trip, Rocky Gap State Park remains one of Maryland’s most scenic summer destinations and one of the best places to experience the state’s famously blue water.
