An adult male was fatally shot by police Sunday evening following a weapons complaint in the 9600 block of Lost Knife Road in Gaithersburg.
According to Montgomery County Police, officers from the 6th District and the Gaithersburg Police Department responded at approximately 6:47 p.m. after a caller reported a man loading a handgun at a bus stop in front of Montgomery Village Plaza. Officers located the man and attempted to peacefully resolve the situation using de-escalation techniques while also clearing the crowded shopping center parking lot.
Police said the man then took actions that caused officers to discharge their service weapons. Officers immediately provided medical aid until Montgomery County Fire and Rescue personnel arrived, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. A handgun was recovered.
No officers or bystanders were injured.
Under Maryland law, the shooting is being investigated by the Maryland Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division. No additional information has been released.
