The Independent Investigations Division (IID) of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General has delayed the release of preliminary information in the fatal police-involved shooting that occurred in Gaithersburg on Sunday, July 12.
According to the IID, investigators need additional time to review information before releasing preliminary findings. No timeline was provided for when the information will be made public.
The shooting happened at approximately 6:47 p.m. in the 9600 block of Lost Knife Road after Montgomery County Police 6th District officers and Gaithersburg Police officers responded to a report of a man loading a handgun at a bus stop in front of Montgomery Village Plaza.
Police said officers located the man and attempted to peacefully resolve the situation using de-escalation techniques while also clearing the crowded shopping center parking lot. During the encounter, the man took actions that caused officers to discharge their service weapons.
Officers immediately rendered medical aid until Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service personnel arrived. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. A handgun was recovered, and no officers or bystanders were injured.
The Independent Investigations Division continues to investigate the shooting, as required under Maryland law.
