Amar Mukunda, the Democratic nominee for Maryland’s District 39 State Senate seat, along with District 39 Democratic Delegates Greg Wims, Lesley Lopez, and Gabe Acevero, released a joint statement following two recent incidents on Lost Knife Road in Gaithersburg: a stabbing on Saturday and an officer-involved shooting on Sunday that resulted in the death of an armed man.
In the statement, the group said the community experienced “two deeply troubling incidents” over the weekend. They noted that Saturday’s stabbing remains under investigation by the Gaithersburg Police Department, while Sunday’s fatal officer-involved shooting is being investigated by the Maryland Office of the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division.
The lawmakers offered their thoughts and prayers to the person injured in Saturday’s stabbing as well as the family and loved ones of the man who died in Sunday’s shooting. “Everyone deserves to feel safe where they live, work, shop, and wait for a bus,” the statement reads. “Residents also deserve a full, transparent, and impartial accounting whenever a life is taken or serious injury occurs.”
The statement says the two incidents have heightened concerns about safety along Lost Knife Road and calls for meaningful steps to prevent violence while improving public safety.
As an initial step, Mukunda, Wims, Lopez, and Acevero announced they will host a community walk on Thursday evening with residents, public officials, and nonprofit partners. According to the statement, the goal is to hear directly from the community, better understand residents’ concerns, and begin identifying practical solutions.
Anyone interested in participating in the community walk is encouraged to message Amar Mukunda for additional details.
