The National Weather Service is warning of two weather hazards expected to impact the region today with dangerous wildfire smoke and the potential for severe thunderstorms.
Wildfire smoke will continue to blanket the area through Saturday morning, with air quality expected to remain in the Unhealthy (Red Alert) to Very Unhealthy (Purple Alert) range. Residents are encouraged to limit time outdoors, especially children, older adults, and those with heart or lung conditions, as the poor air quality may affect anyone spending extended time outside.
In addition to the smoke, severe thunderstorms are possible this afternoon and evening, primarily between 2pm and 8pm. The strongest storms could produce damaging wind gusts, large hail, and an isolated tornado.
The National Weather Service urges residents to have multiple ways to receive weather warnings and to be prepared to take shelter immediately if a Severe Thunderstorm Warning or Tornado Warning is issued.
