A $20,000 reward is now being offered for information leading to the identification of the driver involved in the fatal hit-and-run that killed Hanna Wegayehou, the mother of former Montgomery County Student Member of the Board of Education Nate Tinbite, in Silver Spring last month.
Wegayehou was struck and killed while walking in the crosswalk at Crestmoor Drive and Colesville Road on Friday, June 19, between approximately 1pm and 1:20pm, according to Montgomery County Police. The driver fled the scene.
Tinbite served as the 42nd Student Member of the Montgomery County Board of Education during the 2019-2020 school year while attending John F. Kennedy High School.
On Saturday, Councilmember Kristin Mink said she joined Tinbite and members of Wegayehou’s family to canvass the Woodmoor neighborhood with flyers provided by Montgomery County Police in an effort to generate new leads in the investigation.
Police are searching for a dark-colored Lexus RX, model years 2009-2014. Investigators have released example images of the type of SUV they are seeking, emphasizing that the photos are not of the actual vehicle involved in the crash.
According to Mink, investigators are particularly interested in information about the suspect vehicle or possible surveillance footage showing it traveling through the neighborhood, including Crestmoor Drive, Lorain Avenue, Brookmoor Drive, or northbound on Colesville Road (US-29) after the collision.
The reward increased after Wegayehou’s family matched the $10,000 reward already being offered by Montgomery County Police, bringing the total reward to $20,000 for information leading to the identification of the driver.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Solvers of Montgomery County at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477). Tips may be submitted anonymously, and information leading to an arrest may be eligible for the reward.
