An Olney resident and their cat escaped without injuries after an early morning house fire on McGee Way.
Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) crews were dispatched at 12:57am to the 2900 block of McGee Way, where they found a fire at the rear of the home. Investigators determined the fire was caused by an electrical malfunction at the rear HVAC disconnect.
The occupant was displaced by the fire, but MCFRS said the resident’s quick actions, combined with the rapid response of firefighters, helped prevent a more serious outcome.
MCFRS is reminding residents that electrical malfunctions can occur without warning. Officials encourage homeowners to regularly inspect and maintain HVAC systems and electrical equipment, and to contact a qualified electrician if they notice damaged wiring, flickering lights, unusual odors, or other signs of electrical problems.
Fire officials also emphasized the importance of having working smoke alarms on every level of the home and practicing a home escape plan.
No injuries were reported.
