Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service’s Swift Water Rescue Team resumed its search Thursday morning for a man who went missing in the Potomac River earlier this week.
The man was reported missing at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 28, in the area of Spotzbergen Rock, just south of Sandy Landing. According to MCFRS, crews are deploying swift water rescue boats equipped with sonar, along with search dogs, as they continue efforts to locate him. The search is expected to continue through the morning and into the early afternoon.
The latest search comes after two other fatal incidents in the Potomac River this summer. Earlier this month, MCFRS recovered the body of a 16-year-old boy who disappeared while swimming near Great Falls after an overnight search. The teen had entered the river with friends before failing to resurface.
In June, search crews also recovered the body of 20-year-old Germantown resident and Towson University student Nazir Bell following a three-day search near Great Falls. Bell disappeared on June 14 after becoming separated from a group while swimming in the river.
Officials continue to warn that swimming in the Potomac River, particularly near Great Falls, is extremely dangerous due to powerful currents, submerged hazards and rapidly changing water conditions.
