Juvenile Shot Inside Wheaton Mall, Suspect in Custody

A juvenile was injured in a shooting inside Wheaton Mall Friday evening, according to Montgomery County Police.

At approximately 6pm, 4th District officers responded to the mall in the 11100 block of Veirs Mill Road for a reported shooting. Police said a juvenile victim was shot in the leg and transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities said a juvenile male suspect has been taken into custody. Police confirmed the scene has been secured and there is no longer a threat inside the mall. However, the public is being asked to avoid the area while officers continue their investigation.

Summary of events by MCPD: “The following is a brief summary of events regarding a shooting inside Wheaton Mall in the 11100 block of Veirs Mill Road.

At approximately 6 p.m., 4th District officers and Montgomery County Fire Rescue personnel responded to the location for the report of a shooting.
 
The preliminary investigation has revealed that a 17-year-old male suspect fired a handgun inside the mall, shooting a 13-year-old male victim in the leg.
 
The suspect ran toward Dick’s Sporting Goods, where an armed security guard apprehended and detained him until officers arrived and took him into custody. Officers recovered the suspect’s handgun.
 
Officers provided first aid to the victim, who was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A news release will be distributed when more information becomes available.
