A 17-year-old is in custody after allegedly shooting a 13-year-old boy inside Wheaton Mall Friday evening.
According to Montgomery County Police, 4th District officers and Montgomery County Fire Rescue personnel responded at approximately 6 p.m. to the 11100 block of Veirs Mill Road for a reported shooting. The preliminary investigation found that the 17-year-old suspect fired a handgun inside the mall, striking the 13-year-old victim in the leg.
After the shooting, the suspect ran toward Dick’s Sporting Goods, where an armed security guard apprehended and detained him until officers arrived and took him into custody. Police also recovered the suspect’s handgun.
Officers provided first aid to the victim before he was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police said additional information will be released in a future news release as the investigation continues.
