After years of jokes and skepticism surrounding its long-running “going out of business” sale, Mattress and More Liquidators in Burtonsville is setting the record straight.
The store says it has not been holding a closing sale for decades, despite frequent comments suggesting otherwise. According to Mattress and More Liquidators, much of the confusion stems from the history of the property. The previous business at the location, Mattress Barn, operated there for more than 35 years before holding its own going-out-of-business sale, closing, and selling the property.
Mattress and More Liquidators opened at the location around 2016 under different ownership with a business model focused on selling manufacturer overruns, discontinued models, last-run products, and closeout merchandise at liquidation prices.
The company says the current store-closing sale began a little more than two years ago after being informed that the property would soon be redeveloped as part of the planned Wawa project. At the time, management expected to have only another month or two before vacating the property.
Instead, the redevelopment process took much longer than anticipated. According to the store, the project required additional permits and approvals involving the traffic signal, crosswalk, neighboring property, and overall development plans. Because of those delays, the landlord allowed the business to remain on a month-to-month lease while the redevelopment timeline continued to shift.
Rather than risk receiving only a short notice to vacate, Mattress and More Liquidators says it has now made the decision to officially close the Burtonsville location on October 4.
The business also addressed questions about its pricing, saying the sale is legitimate and encouraging customers to compare the exact mattress models it carries with those sold at retailers such as Mattress Firm, Mattress Warehouse, and major department stores. According to the company, many of its prices are 50% to 60% below advertised sale prices elsewhere.
The store says it still needs to sell its remaining inventory before making one final transfer to its Delmar, Delaware, location in mid-October. Customers with homes on Maryland’s or Delaware’s Eastern Shore can also arrange delivery through the Delmar store.
Mattress and More Liquidators thanked the Burtonsville community for its support over the years and said it looks forward to seeing the long-awaited redevelopment move forward, bringing a new Wawa and improved public spaces to the corner. “So, to set the record straight,” the company said, “it has not been a 30-year store-closing sale. It has been a little over two unusually long years, and October 4 really is our final day.”
The redevelopment will replace the former 7-Eleven at 15585 Old Columbia Pike and Mattress and More Liquidators at 15595 Old Columbia Pike with Burtonsville’s first Wawa. Plans include a 5,919-square-foot convenience store and restaurant, a gas station, 50 parking spaces, up to nine electric vehicle charging stations, landscaped public gathering areas, a new signalized entrance on Old Columbia Pike, improved pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure, and connections to the future Burtonsville to Silver Spring Breezeway.
Forest conservation approvals were granted in January 2025, and with Mattress and More Liquidators now confirming an October 4 closing, the project appears one step closer to moving into the demolition and construction phase.
