MASTIHA to Close Union Market Location August 15

MASTIHA has announced that it will close its Union Market location in Washington, DC, with its final day of service scheduled for Saturday, August 15.

The closure comes a little more than two years after the Greek bakery and taverna concept closed its Rockville location to focus on the Union Market expansion and its MASTIHA Taverna brand. “After much thought and with heavy hearts, we’ve made the difficult decision to close MASTIHA at Union Market,” owners Katerina Georgallas and Rob announced.

Customers are invited to visit during the remaining days for pita wraps, Greek extra virgin olive oil and pantry items. “To our customers, staff, vendors, partners, neighbors, and everyone who has supported us over the years, thank you,” the owners said. “You welcomed us into your lives, shared meals with us, celebrated milestones with us, and made MASTIHA so much more than a business.”

MASTIHA has deep roots in Montgomery County. The business was founded in 2011 and was formerly known as Baklava Couture, operating at 10560 Metropolitan Ave. in Kensington before relocating to 2387 Lewis Ave. in Rockville in April 2023. In June 2023, MASTIHA introduced MASTIHA Taverna, a food truck stationed outside the Rockville bakery specializing in pita sandwiches, Greek desserts, small bites and sides.

The Rockville bakery closed in 2024 as the owners shifted their focus to the Taverna concept and its new Union Market location. At the time, MASTIHA said it was “putting all our energy into our Taverna brand and its new location opening in Union Market.”

According to the bakery, the name Mastiha refers to the sap drippings, or “tears,” of the mastic tree found on the Greek island of Chios, where founder Katerina Georgallas traces her family origins. The business has specialized in Greek sweet and savory pastries, cookies, pita bread, rustic phyllo pies and other scratch-made items.

MASTIHA’s final day at Union Market will be Saturday, August 15. “We hope you’ll visit us in the coming days to say hello, share one last meal, and help us celebrate everything we’ve built together,” Katerina and Rob said. “From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for being part of our journey.”
