Montgomery County is advancing more than 20 bicycle infrastructure projects that will add new bike-friendly pathways and improve connections to transit, schools, businesses and existing trail networks.
According to MCDOT, construction is currently underway on portions of the Capital Crescent Trail between Bethesda and Silver Spring, the Metropolitan Branch Trail in Silver Spring and a neighborhood greenway along McComas Avenue in Wheaton. Together, the projects will add more than two miles of bike pathways.
Another 20 projects are in the planning phase and are expected to add nearly 18 miles of bike-friendly pathways across the county. According to MCDOT, Montgomery County currently has 112 miles of bike lanes, bike-friendly road shoulders and separated bike lanes. The county has added more than 17 miles of bike-friendly pathways since 2022.
MCDOT is also constructing a secure bicycle parking facility at Garage 5 near Dixon Avenue and Bonifant Street in downtown Silver Spring. The facility is expected to open this fall.
Among the larger projects is the Metropolitan Branch Trail, which will connect the Silver Spring Transit Center, Montgomery College’s Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus and Takoma Park. The trail is eventually planned to provide a continuous connection into Washington, D.C., including Union Station and the National Mall.
Future Flash Bus Rapid Transit projects will also incorporate pedestrian and bicycle connections to stations. Flash currently operates along US 29/Colesville Road, with a second line along Veirs Mill Road planned to begin service in late 2028.
