Neighbors Coffee is celebrating its one-year anniversary in Woodley Gardens this weekend, marking a full year since the locally owned café opened its doors at 1101 Nelson Street in Rockville.
Founded by local couple Spencer and Lulu Trach, Neighbors Coffee opened last summer in the former Essex Bank location. The café grew out of a coffee stand the couple previously operated at the Kentlands farmers market before they made the jump to a permanent location.
The opening was also something of a homecoming for the owners. Spencer and Lulu have known each other since their days at Ridgeview Middle School in Gaithersburg and both graduated from Quince Orchard High School. Spencer grew up in the Woodley Gardens neighborhood, and his brother later joined the family business full-time.
From the beginning, the goal was to create more than just a place to grab coffee, with the owners envisioning Neighbors as a community gathering spot. The café features indoor and outdoor seating along with a walk-up window for customers on the go.
Now, one year after opening, Neighbors is thanking the community for its support and preparing to celebrate the milestone throughout the weekend. “When we opened our doors, we set out to build a cafe centered around exceptional coffee and an even better community,” Neighbors shared in announcing the anniversary. “One year later, we’re beyond grateful for what this little neighborhood cafe has become.”
For the anniversary celebration, Neighbors will offer an “All-Star Menu” featuring selections hand-picked by customers. The café said it has staffed and stocked up in preparation for what it expects to be a busy weekend. “One year down. Here’s to many more,” the café shared. “See you this weekend, Neighbors!”
