An 18-year-old Silver Spring man has been sentenced after pleading guilty to a firearm charge stemming from a fight during which a gun discharged in the parking lot of Blake High School earlier this year.
Montgomery County Circuit Court Judge Ann Harrington sentenced Taric Wilson to five years in prison, suspending all but 98 days, followed by three years of supervised probation. Wilson pleaded guilty Aug. 12 to possession of a firearm under the age of 21. He was 17 at the time of the incident but pleaded guilty to an adult charge.
The case stems from an April 29 incident in the parking lot of Blake High School. According to authorities, Wilson was in possession of a handgun that discharged during an altercation involving several individuals, causing injuries to his foot and leg.
Montgomery County Police previously said Wilson exchanged words with several teenage males before a fight began. During the altercation, Wilson was seen holding a handgun while another teen attempted to take it from him. The firearm discharged during the struggle.
MCPS security officers who witnessed the fight approached the group. One security officer saw the handgun and ordered Wilson to drop it. The gun was placed on the ground, but the fight continued, according to police.
Authorities said 19-year-old Djibia Gombo of Silver Spring then picked up the firearm and began walking away. When a second security officer ordered him to drop the weapon, Gombo allegedly pointed the handgun at the officer before placing it on the ground.
Gombo was taken into custody at the scene. His case remains pending on charges of first-degree assault and possession of a dangerous weapon on school property.
Following the incident, Wilson and others involved in the fight left in a vehicle and took him to an area hospital, where he was treated for his injuries.
Assistant State’s Attorneys Shawn Michael and Peter Larson are handling the prosecution.
