Three Maryland cities, including two in Montgomery County, have been named among the 25 safest midsize cities in the United States in a new analysis by SmartAsset, a personal finance website known for its data-driven studies and rankings.
SmartAsset examined more than 300 cities in the country with populations between 65,000 and 250,000. Cities were ranked using a composite score based on violent crime, property crime, traffic fatality rates and natural disaster risk.
Rockville earned the highest ranking among Maryland cities, coming in at No. 18 nationally. The city reported 1.5 violent crimes and 15.23 property crimes per 1,000 residents. Rockville also had 5.62 traffic fatalities per 100,000 residents and was rated as having a relatively moderate natural disaster risk.
Frederick followed at No. 19. The city recorded 4.06 violent crimes and 16.74 property crimes per 1,000 residents, along with 7.96 traffic fatalities per 100,000 residents. Its natural disaster risk was classified as relatively low.
Gaithersburg ranked No. 22, giving Montgomery County two cities in the national top 25. Gaithersburg reported 2.53 violent crimes and 13.12 property crimes per 1,000 residents, while its traffic fatality rate was 5.62 per 100,000 residents. The city received a relatively moderate natural disaster risk rating.
