Chevy Chase-based Forbright Bank has entered into an agreement to sell its Washington, D.C.-area legacy branches and associated deposits to Trustar Bank.
The transaction includes Forbright branches in Potomac and North Bethesda, along with a customer service hub in McLean, Virginia. Trustar will also acquire approximately $750 million in local deposits for a deposit premium of approximately $19 million.
Deposits connected to Forbright’s national lending and digital deposit operations are not included in the transaction.
The sale is expected to close during the fourth quarter of 2026, subject to regulatory approval and other customary closing conditions. Forbright expects the transaction to contribute positively to its 2027 earnings.
The company said the sale will allow it to concentrate on three nationwide business areas: digital banking and deposits, specialized middle-market commercial lending, and fee-based advisory and servicing operations.
Forbright launched its digital banking platform in 2022, and the platform now serves more than 100,000 accounts.
“Our national businesses have reached the scale and momentum that allow us to focus our capital, technology, and management attention where our competitive advantages are strongest,” Forbright Executive Chairman and founder John Delaney said. “We are pleased to deliver our local deposit platform and loyal customers to Trustar, an exceptionally well-managed community bank known for superior customer service.”
Forbright CEO Don Cole said the transaction is intended to make the bank more focused and efficient as the banking industry increasingly shifts toward digital services.
“The results across our nationwide businesses are accelerating, and the structural shifts in banking are real and durable,” Cole said. “This transaction is about becoming more focused, more efficient, and better positioned for long-term growth.”
Forbright Bank is headquartered in Chevy Chase and provides nationwide middle-market lending, digital consumer banking, strategic advisory and asset-management services.
