Maryland ranked as the 14th-hardest-working state in the country, according to a new report from personal-finance company WalletHub.
The 2026 Hardest-Working States in America report compared all 50 states across ten metrics, including average weekly work hours, employment rates, the share of workers with multiple jobs, volunteer hours, commute times, and the amount of leisure time residents have each day.
Maryland ranked second nationally for average commute time, the state’s highest placement among the individual categories highlighted in the report. The state also ranked 11th for average leisure time per day.
Maryland’s remaining rankings included 18th for the share of workers with multiple jobs, 20th for annual volunteer hours per resident, 25th for employment rate, and 26th for average workweek hours.
WalletHub released the report as nearly half of Americans reportedly do not expect to use all of their paid time off. Rankings closer to first indicate higher placement within each category. For the full report, please visit:
