The Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center (MCASAC) in Derwood will waive adoption fees on Saturday, August 29, and Sunday, August 30, as part of NBCUniversal Local’s 2026 “Clear the Shelters” campaign.
The shelter, located at 7315 Muncaster Mill Road, will open at 11am both days. More than 150 animals are currently available for adoption, including dogs, cats, guinea pigs, rabbits, ducks and chickens.
MCASAC previously held a Clear the Shelters adoption event earlier this month that resulted in 54 animals finding new homes. During last year’s campaign, more than 100 pets were adopted.
Adoptions during the upcoming weekend will be completed the same day on a first-come, first-served basis, and pets cannot be placed on hold. Adoption fees will be waived, though licensing fees may still apply for dogs and cats.
Prospective adopters are encouraged to review available animals before visiting and should be prepared to bring their new pet home that day. Those adopting dogs should bring a leash and collar, while those adopting cats or small animals should bring an appropriate carrier.
MCASAC is Montgomery County’s only open-admission municipal animal shelter and is operated by the Montgomery County Office of Animal Services.
