Marylanders will have an opportunity to view a partial lunar eclipse overnight Thursday into Friday, with more than 90% of the moon expected to be covered at its peak.
According to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, the Sturgeon Moon will rise at 7:56pm Thursday. The eclipse will begin becoming noticeable around 10:30pm as the moon passes through Earth’s shadow.
Viewers should look toward the south-southeastern sky. The eclipse will reach its peak shortly after midnight, when approximately 93% of the moon will be covered, before ending around 3am. The moon is expected to set at 6:53am Friday.
A lunar eclipse occurs when Earth moves between the sun and moon, blocking sunlight and casting a shadow across the moon’s surface. NASA confirms that the partial eclipse will be visible across the Americas, with the partial phase lasting approximately three hours and 18 minutes.
