MD 355 Bus-Only Lanes to Reopen to All Vehicles on Labor Day

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will begin removing approximately 7.5 lane-miles of temporary bus-only lanes along MD 355, also known as Wisconsin Avenue, next week.

Beginning on Labor Day, Monday, September 7, the former bus-only lanes will reopen to all vehicle traffic. Removal work will continue through Friday, September 11, with crews working overnight to remove lane markings and signage. The project will also include restriping portions of the roadway to restore the original on-street parking.

The temporary lanes supported free shuttle bus service between the North Bethesda and Friendship Heights Metro stations during Metro’s Summer 2026 Red Line Major Construction project in Montgomery County. The lanes were installed to help shuttle buses move through traffic while portions of the Red Line were temporarily closed.

The State Highway Administration thanked drivers and other travelers for their patience during the Metro shutdown.
