U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has lodged a detainer for a Germantown man charged in the August 29 wrong-way crash on I-270 in Montgomery County that killed a mother and daughter and injured two others.
The Department of Homeland Security announced that ICE lodged the detainer on September 1 for Jose Antonio Caballero-Nolasco, 32, asking Maryland officials not to release him from custody. DHS identified him as a Salvadoran national and said he entered the United States illegally at an unknown date and location.
Maryland State Police previously identified the driver as Jose Caballero Nolasco, of Germantown. He is charged with two counts of gross negligent manslaughter, two counts of homicide by motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol, and one count of life-threatening injury by motor vehicle.
According to the preliminary police investigation, Caballero-Nolasco was driving a Ford Mustang north in the southbound lanes of I-270 when it collided head-on with a Toyota Camry just south of Democracy Boulevard. Troopers responded at approximately 6:46pm on Saturday, August 29. Investigators said impairment may have contributed to the crash.
Two passengers in the Toyota, Musammat Shamima Begum, 46, and her daughter, Areebah Jahin, 23, of Burke and Alexandria, Virginia, were killed. The Toyota’s driver, a 62-year-old man, and an 8-year-old girl who was also a passenger were transported to local hospitals for treatment of their injuries.
Caballero-Nolasco, the sole occupant of the Mustang, was also hospitalized before being released and transferred to the Montgomery County Detention Center. Southbound I-270 was closed for approximately five hours as investigators worked at the scene. The Maryland State Police Crash Team is leading the investigation.
