Montgomery County Native Jordan Hawkins Headed to Memphis in Reported Trade

Montgomery County native and former Gaithersburg High School basketball standout Jordan Hawkins is headed to the Memphis Grizzlies as part of a trade reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania.

According to Charania, the New Orleans Pelicans are trading Hawkins, Micah Peavy, a future second-round pick, and a future second-round pick swap to Memphis in exchange for AJ Johnson and Taj Gibson.

Hawkins spent his first three NBA seasons with the Pelicans after being selected 14th overall in the 2023 NBA Draft. He has averaged 8 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 1 assist per game during his NBA career.

Hawkins attended Gaithersburg Elementary School, Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in Germantown, and Gaithersburg High School, where he played his freshman and sophomore seasons before transferring to DeMatha Catholic in Hyattsville. He averaged 20.2 points per game as a sophomore at Gaithersburg.

At DeMatha, Hawkins earned recognition as the 2020-21 Gatorade Maryland Player of the Year before continuing his basketball career at UConn. He helped lead the Huskies to the 2023 national championship before entering the NBA that summer.
