Gaithersburg Accepting Applications for Anticipated City Council Vacancy

The City of Gaithersburg is accepting applications from qualified residents interested in filling an anticipated vacancy on the City Council. Applications must be submitted by Friday, October 2, 2026, at 5pm.

According to the city’s announcement, the expected opening follows Mayor Jud Ashman’s conditional resignation, which would take effect Monday, November 9, depending on the outcome of the November 3 Montgomery County Council District 3 General Election.

The City Council is expected to appoint a new mayor from among its current members, creating a vacancy on the council. The Mayor and City Council would then appoint a resident to fill that seat through a public selection process.

The selected candidate is expected to be sworn in during a Special Session on Monday, November 9, 2026. Residents interested in being considered must complete the City Council Vacancy Application. Additional information is available through the City of Gaithersburg.
