Georgetown’s Yala Greek Ice Cream Will Be Available in Montgomery County This Weekend

Yala Greek Ice Cream will be available in Montgomery County for a limited time as it will be among the vendors at this weekend’s Greek Festival, taking place September 11-13 at 721 Norwood Rd in Silver Spring.

According to festival organizers, Yala creates rich, creamy Greek ice cream featuring Mediterranean flavors and Greek dessert inspirations, including honey, pistachio, sour cherry, and baklava swirls. Visitors can stop by its booth for a scoop during the three-day celebration.

Yala was founded by Chrys Kefalas, a former Maryland U.S. Senate candidate, with inspiration from his grandfather and his family’s Greek ice cream-making traditions. The brand’s name comes from γάλα (gála), the Greek word for milk.

As we reported in 2025, Kefalas opened Yala in Georgetown at 3143 N St. NW. At the time, he told BizJournals, “The one thing I always wanted to do was make something my papou would be proud of,” referring to his grandfather.

The company describes its ice cream as handcrafted using farm-fresh milk and ingredients sourced from Greece, the Mediterranean, and other producers, with recipes developed using techniques perfected in Greece and churned in America.
