Maryland Ranked 8th Most Diverse State in America

Maryland has been ranked among the 10 most diverse states in the country, according to a new WalletHub analysis released as Hispanic Heritage Month gets underway.

Maryland ranked No. 8 overall in WalletHub’s 2026 Most Diverse States in America report, which compared all 50 states across six major categories: socio-economic, cultural, economic, household, religious and political diversity.

Maryland performed particularly well in racial and ethnic diversity, ranking fourth in the country. The state also ranked fifth for educational-attainment diversity and fifth for worker-class diversity, which measures the civilian employed population age 16 and older.

Maryland’s other rankings included ninth for birthplace diversity, 12th for household-size diversity and 15th for linguistic diversity. The state finished lower in several categories, ranking 23rd for generational diversity, 27th for marital-status diversity, 27th for religious diversity and 30th for household-type diversity.

WalletHub released the report as Hispanic Heritage Month begins. The annual observance runs from September 15 through October 15 and recognizes the histories, cultures and contributions of Americans with roots in Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America and South America.
