The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) has announced the purchase and rollout of 70 new electric-assist Capital Bikeshare bikes, marking the County’s first purchase of the popular ebikes.
The new bikes are intended to increase availability across Montgomery County, where Capital Bikeshare ridership more than doubled from 102,000 rides in 2023 to more than 224,000 in 2025. MCDOT said about 70% of Capital Bikeshare trips are currently taken on ebikes.
Capital Bikeshare ebikes provide electric pedal assistance to make longer trips and hills easier to navigate. The current cost of a 15-minute ride is approximately $2.25 for members and $6.25 for nonmembers.
Unlike standard bikes, ebikes can also be left at public bike racks within the service area instead of docking stations for an additional fee. Ebikes are not permitted on sidewalks in Montgomery County.
Capital Bikeshare launched in Montgomery County in 2013. The County now has 540 bikes and 80 docking stations.
