5:00pm update: WSSC Water’s essential-water-use-only request has been lifted as of 5:00 p.m. for all 1.9 million customers in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties
WSSC Water’s essential-water-use-only request remains in effect for all 1.9 million customers in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties as crews continue critical electrical work at the Potomac Water Filtration Plant.
According to a Wednesday morning update from WSSC Water, the situation has stabilized from a water production standpoint, with the plant continuing to produce water and replenish the distribution system. Power delivery to the plant also remains adequate.
However, the plant is currently operating under a temporary internal electrical configuration while crews work around the clock to fully restore power and normal plant operations.
Customers are still being strongly encouraged to use water only as necessary, avoid outdoor water use, including lawn irrigation, limit toilet flushing and avoid or limit the use of washing machines and dishwashers. There remains no boil water advisory, and WSSC Water says drinking water remains safe to use.
WSSC Water has also temporarily suspended all planned maintenance and construction work in an effort to minimize the impact on the water distribution system. Crews will continue responding to water and sewer emergencies.
The Potomac Water Filtration Plant draws water directly from the Potomac River and is the larger of WSSC Water’s two filtration plants, providing drinking water to approximately 70% to 75% of WSSC Water customers.
WSSC Water said it will continue monitoring water production, demand and the progress of permanent electrical repairs. The essential-water-use-only request remains in effect until further notice.
