Montgomery Parks will celebrate the department’s first 18-hole disc golf course with an event on Friday, October 9 from 4-6pm at Northwest Branch Recreational Park, located at 1313 Bonifant Rd in Colesville.
The course opened last November and was designed by professional disc golf player and course designer Andrew Fish. It features a combination of open and wooded holes, with multiple layouts designed to accommodate players with different skill and experience levels.
“This new disc golf course expands the ways people of all ages and skill levels can get outside, be active, and connect,” Montgomery Parks Director Miti Figueredo said. “As our first 18-hole course, it reflects input from disc golf players, and we hope it will encourage more people to participate in this sport.”
Montgomery Parks describes disc golf as an easy-to-learn and rapidly growing sport that can be played by people of a wide range of ages and abilities. “If you can throw a frisbee, you can play disc golf,” Montgomery Parks Project Manager Evan Dintaman said.
Fish said Northwest Branch Recreational Park offered a secluded setting that allowed the course to incorporate both open and wooded play. “As a professional player and course designer, I was thrilled with Montgomery Parks’ responsiveness to the local disc golf community’s requests for a course,” Fish said. “Northwest Branch Recreational Park provides a fabulous and secluded setting for open and wooded disc golf holes, and we created multiple layouts to be accessible for multiple skill and experience levels and make the course distinct from others in the region.”
A new shaded plaza pavilion with picnic tables, seating and bike racks was completed this month. The course also includes portable restrooms and a drinking fountain. The October 9 celebration will run from 4-6pm and include a brief speaking program followed by disc golf demonstrations and tutorials.
