$10 Million Bicycle and Pedestrian Project Begins In Montgomery County

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will begin construction on a $10 million bicycle and pedestrian route along MD 390 (16th Street) in Silver Spring, with a long-term lane closure scheduled to begin Monday, October 5.

The project will extend along 16th Street between Spring Street and 2nd Avenue and is designed to improve bicycle and pedestrian connections in the area.

Beginning October 5, crews will implement a single-lane closure on northbound 16th Street that is expected to remain in place for approximately nine months. Drivers are being advised to allow additional travel time during construction.

Additional single-lane closures are scheduled Mondays through Fridays from 9am-3pm, with off-peak nighttime closures possible as needed within the project limits. Work hours are subject to change.

The new route will include an eight-foot-wide, two-way protected bike path separated from vehicle traffic by a concrete or grass median. A six-foot-wide ADA-compliant sidewalk will also be constructed.

As part of the project, the intersection of 16th Street and Spring Street will be reconstructed as a bicycle-protected intersection. Crews will also install traffic signals, signs and lighting and make upgrades to stormwater management facilities and landscaping.

According to the State Highway Administration, the route will provide connections to the upcoming MD 97 Montgomery Hills project and other bicycle facilities in the area. It will also improve connections to the Forest Glen Metro Station and the future Woodside Purple Line Station.

Brawner Builders Inc. of Hunt Valley is the contractor for the project. Construction is expected to be completed in late 2027 or early 2028, weather permitting.
