Mattress Store to Close Permanently Sunday Ahead of Wawa Redevelopment

Mattress and More Liquidators in Burtonsville has confirmed it will permanently close at the end of business Sunday, October 4, bringing an end to a store-closing sale that lasted more than two years as the property awaited redevelopment.

The closure clears the way for the planned redevelopment of the property at 15595 Old Columbia Pike and the neighboring former 7-Eleven property at 15585 Old Columbia Pike, where Burtonsville’s first Wawa is planned.

Mattress and More Liquidators previously addressed years of jokes and skepticism surrounding its lengthy “going out of business” sale, explaining that the sale began after the business was informed the property would be redeveloped for the Wawa project. Management initially expected it would have only another month or two at the location.

Instead, the redevelopment process took considerably longer than anticipated as additional permits and approvals were needed involving the traffic signal, crosswalk, neighboring property and overall development plans. The landlord allowed Mattress and More Liquidators to remain on a month-to-month lease while the timeline continued to shift.

The store also clarified that it has not been holding a going-out-of-business sale for decades. Mattress Barn previously operated at the location for more than 35 years before closing and selling the property. Mattress and More Liquidators opened around 2016 under different ownership.

With the Burtonsville store now reaching its actual final day, remaining inventory is expected to be transferred to the company’s Delmar, Delaware, location later this month.

Plans for the Burtonsville redevelopment include a 5,919 SF Wawa convenience store and restaurant, a gas station, 50 parking spaces, up to nine electric vehicle charging stations, landscaped public gathering areas, a new signalized entrance on Old Columbia Pike, improved pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure, and connections to the future Burtonsville to Silver Spring Breezeway.

Forest conservation approvals for the project were granted in January 2025. The permanent closure of Mattress and More Liquidators removes one of the remaining businesses from the redevelopment site as the project moves closer to demolition and construction. A timeline is not yet available.
