Planned Major Lane Closures Across the State of Maryland

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration has announced several construction projects and traffic alerts that could impact motorists across the state, including upcoming work in Montgomery County.

In Montgomery County, SHA is beginning construction on a $10 million bicycle and pedestrian project along MD 390 (16th Street) between Spring Street and 2nd Avenue in Silver Spring.

As part of the project, a single northbound lane of 16th Street will be closed for approximately nine months beginning Monday, October 5. Additional weekday single-lane closures are expected between 9am and 3pm, with off-peak nighttime closures possible as needed.

The project will add an eight-foot-wide, two-way protected bike path, a six-foot-wide ADA-compliant sidewalk and a bicycle-protected intersection at 16th Street and Spring Street, along with new traffic signals, signs, lighting, stormwater improvements and landscaping. Construction is expected to continue through late 2027 or early 2028.

Elsewhere in Maryland, motorists should be aware of several additional projects and traffic impacts.

In Baltimore County, ongoing Transportation Systems Management and Operations work along I-695 between I-70 and MD 43 (White Marsh Boulevard) will result in weekly lane, ramp and shoulder closures.

In Anne Arundel County, SHA has announced resurfacing work along portions of MD 214 and MD 2.

In Calvert and St. Mary’s counties, routine maintenance is planned for the MD 4/Gov. Thomas Johnson Bridge. SHA is also resurfacing a section of northbound MD 2/4 (Solomons Island Road) in Calvert County.

In Talbot County, crews are resurfacing approximately 2.5 miles of westbound US 50.

Drivers traveling through affected areas should expect potential delays and plan additional travel time while work is underway.
