Missing University of Maryland Student Found After Multi-Day Search

A University of Maryland student who had been the subject of an extensive search has been found and reunited with his family, according to the University of Maryland Police Department (UMPD).

“Update: Missing student has been found! Thanks to the immense efforts of UMPD and our entire community, Dilan has been reunited with family. We thank all Terps and community members who spread the word and supported this search,” UMPD announced Tuesday evening. Additional details were not provided.

Dilan Shaan Ashar, 22, had been reported as a critical missing student. Police previously said he was without his cell phone, wallet, or identification.

According to an investigative update provided by UMPD earlier Tuesday, security camera footage showed Dilan at Terrapin Trail Garage at approximately 2:30am on October 2. Detectives and officers went to the garage to begin searching the area.

At approximately noon on October 3, UMPD used a drone to conduct an aerial search of the wooded area near Terrapin Trail Garage. Later that evening, police continued search efforts in the area as the investigation into Dilan’s whereabouts continued.

UMPD also shared a video from Dilan’s family and asked members of the university and surrounding community to continue spreading the word and looking for him.

Those efforts concluded Tuesday with the announcement that Dilan had been located and reunited with his family. Additional details regarding where or how he was found were not immediately provided.
