Washington Gas will replace the gas main system along Laurel Avenue beginning in November, with the project expected to keep the street closed to traffic through the end of December.
The street will close beginning October 19 to allow for preparations ahead of gas main work, which is scheduled to begin November 2. Both lanes of Laurel Avenue will remain closed to traffic for the duration of the project.
The gas main is located beneath the side of Laurel Avenue currently occupied by the Streetery. To accommodate the work, the Streetery pavilions and furniture will be temporarily relocated to the opposite side of the street. That process is expected to begin October 19 and be completed by November 2.
According to the City, Washington Gas will install barricades and other protective measures to maintain safe pedestrian access to businesses and the Post Office along the block while construction is underway.
Gas main work will take place from 8am to 5pm Monday through Friday and is projected to be completed by the end of December 2026. Once the project is complete, the Streetery pavilions and furniture will be returned to their permanent location and the traffic side of Laurel Avenue will reopen.
