MCPS Begins Community Meetings on Potential School Closures and Consolidations

Montgomery County Public Schools will begin a series of community engagement sessions next week as part of its long-term study of shifting enrollment, school capacity, and potential future elementary and middle school closures, consolidations, and boundary changes.

The first in-person meeting for the Elementary and Middle School Consolidation and Closure Study will take place Monday, October 19, from 6:30-8:30pm at Gaithersburg Middle School.

MCPS said enrollment shifts have left some schools with excess capacity while other parts of the county continue to grow. The district is conducting a countywide evaluation of its facilities and resources as part of a two-year planning process.

MCPS emphasized that no decisions have been made regarding school closures, consolidations, or boundary changes. Any changes resulting from the process would not take effect until the 2029-2030 school year. The first round of in-person meetings is scheduled for:

  • Monday, October 19 – Gaithersburg Middle School, 2 Teachers Way, Gaithersburg
  • Tuesday, October 20 – Kingsview Middle School, 18909 Kingsview Rd, Germantown
  • Wednesday, October 21 – Rosa Parks Middle School, 19200 Olney Mill Rd, Olney
  • Thursday, October 22 – A. Mario Loiederman Middle School, 12701 Goodhill Rd, Silver Spring
  • Wednesday, October 28 – Julius West Middle School, 651 Great Falls Rd, Rockville
  • Thursday, October 29 – Eastern Middle School, 300 University Blvd E, Silver Spring

All in-person sessions will run from 6:30-8:30pm. MCPS will also hold virtual engagement sessions on October 19, October 23, October 30, and November 2 from noon-1pm. A second round of community engagement is scheduled for November 30 through December 10.

The meetings are intended to gather feedback from families and community members as MCPS evaluates long-term facilities planning and enrollment trends.
