Laurel Avenue Closing October 19 Through End of the Year

Washington Gas is preparing to replace the gas main system along Laurel Avenue, resulting in a full closure of the street through the end of the year.

The City of Takoma Park announced that both lanes of Laurel Avenue will be closed to traffic beginning October 19. Gas main replacement work is expected to begin November 2 and continue through the end of December 2026.

The gas main is located beneath the side of Laurel Avenue currently occupied by the Streetery. To accommodate the project, the Streetery pavilions and furniture will be temporarily relocated to the opposite side of Laurel Avenue. That relocation is expected to take place between October 19 and November 2.

According to the City, Washington Gas will install barricades and other protective measures to maintain safe pedestrian access to businesses and the Post Office along the affected block throughout the project.

Gas main replacement work is scheduled to take place from 8am-5pm, Monday through Friday. Laurel Avenue will remain closed to vehicle traffic for the duration of the project.

Once the work is complete, the Streetery pavilions and furniture will be returned to their permanent location and the traffic side of Laurel Avenue will reopen. Questions about the project can be directed to Public Works Director Daryl Braithwaite at 301-891-7615.
