More Than 1,000 Residents Receive Free Bicycles Through Montgomery County Program

The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) announced that its Bike Match MoCo program has provided bicycles to more than 1,000 residents since launching in June 2020.

The year-round program connects residents in need of transportation with bicycles donated by community members. To date, 1,005 residents have received bikes, including 143 children. Despite reaching the milestone, demand remains high, with approximately 450 residents currently on the waiting list. MCDOT is encouraging residents with unused bicycles in good working condition to consider donating them.

On Friday, October 16, MCDOT held its annual bike donation drive in Rockville, collecting 129 bicycles. Volunteers from Rockville Bike Hub inspect and refurbish donated bikes before they are distributed through Bike Match MoCo and other programs, including Rockville’s Terrific Kids and Bikes for the World.

MCDOT has sponsored the annual donation drive since 2017, collecting more than 1,800 bicycles over eight years of events. Residents interested in donating or requesting a bicycle can visit the Bike Match MoCo website for additional information and an application.
