Drivers Urged to Watch for Trick-or-Treaters During Halloween Weekend; Free Sober Rides Available

The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) is urging drivers to slow down and remain alert during Halloween weekend, when children and families will be out trick-or-treating after dark.

According to the National Safety Council, children are more than twice as likely to be struck and killed by a vehicle on Halloween compared to other days of the year. MCDOT encourages drivers to avoid residential neighborhoods during trick-or-treating hours when possible, watch for pedestrians, and use extra caution near driveways and intersections.

Daylight saving time also ends Sunday, November 1, when clocks move back one hour, bringing earlier darkness.

The Washington Regional Alcohol Program’s (WRAP) SoberRide program will offer a limited number of free Lyft ride codes worth up to $15 on Friday, October 30, and Saturday, October 31, from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. Codes will be released at 9 p.m. each day at wrap.org/soberride.
