MCPS to Reduce Number of Career and Technical Education Programs From 51 to 37

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) has announced changes to its Career and Technical Education (CTE) offerings that will reduce the number of state-approved programs of study from 51 to 37 beginning in fall 2027.

Under the new structure, some existing CTE programs will be phased out, while others will be combined or updated. MCPS says the changes are intended to create more integrated and modernized pathways that prepare students for high-wage, high-demand careers.

Some CTE programs will also be incorporated into MCPS’ new six-region high school model, with the goal of expanding access to high-demand programs across Montgomery County. The restructured offerings will align with Maryland’s new 14-career-cluster model.

Students who are already enrolled in a CTE program will not have their current pathway disrupted. According to MCPS, those students will be able to complete their existing programs and earn the credentials they are currently pursuing.

The changes are scheduled to take effect beginning with the 2027–2028 school year.
