Three Maryland Delis Named Among the Best in America

Cheapism has included three Maryland delis on its list of the “27 Best Delis Across America, According to Customers,” including two with locations in Montgomery County.

Attman’s Delicatessen (Baltimore and Potomac). Attman’s Delicatessen, which has locations in Baltimore and at Park Potomac in Potomac, was founded by Harry Attman in Baltimore in 1915. More than a century later, the deli remains in the family, with Harry Attman’s grandson Marc Attman now at the helm.

Cheapism highlighted Attman’s extensive menu, including its well-known combination sandwiches and traditional deli sandwiches.“Attman’s survived a century thanks to a vast, sprawling menu that includes the deli’s famous combo sandwiches as well as the classic sandwiches that Attman’s promises are ‘fit for a king or a queen,’” Cheapism writes.

Chick & Ruth’s Delly (Annapolis). Chick & Ruth’s Delly in Annapolis was also included on the national list. The longtime downtown Annapolis restaurant is known for its large selection of sandwiches served on house-baked bread, with many menu items named after local politicians.

Cheapism also highlighted the deli’s “Man vs. Food” challenge, which pairs a 1.5-pound “Colossal” Reuben with a six-pound milkshake. Chick & Ruth’s was operated by the same family for five decades before changing ownership and remains one of downtown Annapolis’ best-known restaurants.

Parkway Deli (Silver Spring). Parkway Deli & Restaurant has been serving New York-style deli fare in Silver Spring since 1963, when it was founded by Lou Gurewitz. The restaurant is now operated by his grandsons.

Cheapism noted that Parkway had already developed a loyal local following before receiving national attention from the Food Network, highlighting its oversized sandwiches, burgers and hot dogs, along with the restaurant’s history. Parkway still has a copy of its original 1963 menu, when a corned beef sandwich cost $1.15.
