Maryland’s Largest Tree Stands 145 Feet Tall

Maryland’s largest tree is located right here in Montgomery County. The massive American sycamore grows in Dickerson Conservation Park and measures 27 feet around its trunk, stands 145 feet tall, and has a canopy spread of 112 feet.

The tree was officially recognized as “Maryland’s Biggest Tree” through a proclamation from then-Governor Martin O’Malley in 2012.

The largest identified trees of individual species at the county, state, and national levels are known as champion trees. According to Montgomery County, the Dickerson sycamore is particularly well suited to hold the distinction of Maryland’s largest tree because American sycamores are fast-growing and resilient.

The tree also benefits from ideal growing conditions along the Potomac River, where fertile, wet soil and a sheltered environment help protect it from wind and storms. Most American sycamores grow to between 75 and 100 feet tall.

Residents interested in growing an American sycamore of their own can purchase one at a discounted price through Reforest Montgomery’s $50 coupon program. The county’s free shade tree program is also expected to accept its next round of applications from February 1 through February 8, 2027.
